Tell us a little about yourself!

I grew up on the mean streets/cul-de-sacs of Scarborough, Maine. My late teens had a very jock-centric vibe which lead me down the strength and conditioning rabbit hole at an earlier age than most. Nowadays you’ll either find me in a gym with my face in a camera or computer, or with my lovely better half and our three pups. That balance is extremely important to me.

When did you start coaching Crossfit?
I started coaching CrossFit in my parent's garage in 2009.

Why do you CrossFit?

This has morphed a tremendous amount in the last decade. It started out with a more ego driven mission but opened itself up to something that is very much the opposite. When I take the time in the gym to push myself, especially when surrounded by our community, I am instantly a better husband, son, brother, friend, co-worker, and human.

What's your favorite/least favorite CrossFit movement?
I love all of the movements, it's just when the reps exceed 1 that I struggle.

What’s your favorite dessert?
The elusive yet life changing Cinnamon Ice Cream.

I grew up in Windham, Maine and from an early age really enjoyed playing sports, specifically football. Growing up and playing football and eventually playing at Bates College, the off-season was always about trying to get the edge which involved a lot of time in the weight room and on the track. Around my senior year, after the football season, a friend of mine introduced me to this “crazy new program” called CrossFit and for nearly two years I did the daily workout on CrossFit.com. I went to graduate school in central Pennsylvania where I first had the opportunity to coach CrossFit and I discovered my true passion in life, helping others be healthier. I am proud to say that I am both an Owner and a Coach of Misfit Gym Portland

When did you start coaching Crossfit?I started with the CrossFit Kid’s program at CrossFit 321 before I was named Head Coach of CrossFit Lewisburg in Pennsylvania. After graduating I moved home to work for Misfit Gym and I’ve been here ever since.

Why do you CrossFit?

Growing up my parents put us kids before worrying about their own health. I swore to myself that I would never allow myself to be so out of shape that I couldn’t participate in my own life or the life of my family.

How do you like to use your fitness?
I enjoy hiking, playing with my dogs, and biking.

What’s your favorite dessert?
Brownies

I grew up in Maine and played ice hockey from age 4 through college where I studied engineering and went through the Naval ROTC program. A fellow hockey player introduced me to CrossFit in 2011, so we used CrossFit as a way to get in better shape for hockey and to prepare for the military. I have always like to compete, so I pursued competitive CrossFit for a couple years before stepping back to enjoy coaching, taking classes, and exercising for life instead of competition. I had the privilege of leading a platoon and company of Marines over the course of 4 years on active duty, and now I look forward to empowering the people at MFG to make positive changes in both their own lives, and the lives of those around them.

When did you start coaching Crossfit?
I started coaching CrossFit in 2012 at CrossFit MF in Portland.

Why do you CrossFit?

After having watched two grandparents spend the last decade of their lives in a nursing home, I intend to never have to have someone else take care of me when I’m older. A nursing home or loss of functionality should not be the norm, and I want to be part of the solution.

How do you like to use your fitness?
Surfing and road biking when it's nice out.

What’s your favorite dessert?
Holy Donut...

When my family and I moved to Maine in 2003 my Mom urged me to join the middle school soccer team, but quickly found a passion in running. In my first years of college at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences I joined the cross country team and raced shorter distances until deciding in 2014 that I wanted to run my first marathon. After finishing that race and unexpectedly winning I knew I needed to build strength if I wanted to sustain my running ability. Enter my discovery of CrossFit, and three years, six marathons, two triathlons, one pharmacist degree, and countless CrossFit classes later I decided to retire my running shoes and exclusively CrossFit. I am so proud to be a coach at a gym that provides not only fitness and community to its members but instills confidence and joy and empowers them to be the best versions of themselves when they walk through the door.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I’ve been an avid bicyclist most of my life, starting out in BMX and mountain biking as a kid and moving on to road biking and triathlons as an adult. I stumbled on CrossFit in 2017 and never looked back. I completed my CF-L1 and started coaching in 2020, and then completed the USAW-L1 (USA Weightlifting) the following year. As an athlete, I love the constant challenge of CrossFit. As a coach, I live to see how critical interactions can make big improvements in an athlete’s approach to health and fitness.

When I’m not wearing gym clothes, I develop affordable housing and design programs for vulnerable populations in Maine and New Hampshire. My wife Dee and I along with our two teenage daughters have been residents of North Yarmouth since 2011. Although I was born and raised in Virginia, I get some Maine street cred for marrying a woman from The County. I look forward to working with you all in class, or throwing down alongside you!

My fiance Julie and I moved to Maine from Seattle in the summer of 2018, and I had lived in Washington for 11 years before that. I was an active kid, but not exactly a great athlete. I got third place, like, a lot. I played soccer, ran track and sailed until high school, when I started rowing. It's a great sport because people will try it and discover that for whatever reason it's the exact right kind of athleticism for them in a way nothing else is, which is certainly what happened for me. In my 20's I was variously a baker, personal trainer and rowing coach and at 30 decided to start going back to school to finish a degree, and I'm now a full time student at USM studying Athletic Training. In my non-gym free time these days I enjoy a good PC game, league ultimate frisbee, pulling tufts of fur out of my ever-shedding dog Cider and the health and wellness benefits associated with a mostly plant-based diet.

What are your favorite and least favorite CrossFit movements?

Favorite is anything high skill even if I'm bad at it. Least favorite is anything low skill especially if I'm bad at it.⠀

When did you start coaching Crossfit?
I started coaching at Northwest CrossFit in Seattle in 2014. I was a personal trainer for 2 years and also coached rowing for 7 years..

I am originally from New Jersey, but now live in Maine and enjoy spending time with my wife and our new baby Daughter Emma. My first experience with Crossfit was in 2010. After being too embarrassed to lift weights in front of other people, I went into my room and tried to do a push-up, and wasn't able to. I remember at the time feeling angry and upset with myself and after some research about how to get swole as quickly as possible, I made my way to some CrossFit videos online and decided this is the stuff that I wanted to do. Before  I started Olympic Lifting. After a few years my weightlifting coach put me on an assault bike for the first time I was hooked, and immediately switched my membership to the Crossfit side of the gym. After a few years of bouncing around local Portland Crossfit gyms I decided to give Misfit Gym Portland a try and I have not looked back!

I am a Maine native and spent my childhood staying active through the sports of basketball and baseball, as well as spending every summer outdoors away at summer camp. Today I am a Special Education teacher at a small day treatment school in New Gloucester. Outside of the gym I enjoy cooking for my wife Sydney as we watch and cheer on the Patriots or Celtics!.

What are your favorite and least favorite CrossFit movements?
Burpees over anything & weighted step overs/ups

What is your background in Crossfit?I discovered CrossFit from the 2015 Games documentary on Netflix. I knew a few people doing CrossFit and was tired of the boring grind of motivating myself to go to the YMCA or go for a run. I googled CrossFit near me and stumbled upon CrossFit Yarmouth. I began there in 2017 and in August 2019 joined MF with my wife Sydney and we have loved every moment!

When did you start coaching Crossfit?
I began coaching in 2018 at CrossFit Yarmouth.
