New Member FAQs

Welcome to CrossFit MF / Misfit Gym Portland!

You just made the single best decision you could have to take control of your fitness and health. It’s important to understand that taking 1 hour a day to prioritize yourself is one of the least selfish things you can do not only for your own sake, but for your family, children, and your community. Ensuring your are physically capable and metabolically healthy means that when life throws the inevitable curveball your way, you are the best position you can be to handle it.

To get you started off on the right foot, we wanted to share a few common FAQs so you’re set up for success at Misfit Gym Portland.

Classes

I took my free classes and am now a full fledged Misfit (hell ya!), what do I do now?

First off, welcome. We’re really glad you’re here. Now the fun begins. Open the StreamFit app, choose a class time that works for you, and sign up. We use the app to register for classes, track workouts, and share announcements in our chat channels. If you sign up for a class and later realize you can’t make it, please remove yourself from the roster as soon as possible so someone else can grab the spot.

When should I arrive at the gym, and what should I do when I get there?

We encourage everyone to arrive at least 5 minutes before class starts. This gives you time to change, settle in, and check the whiteboard for any notes from the coach. You’ll often see members warming up on a bike or doing a bit of mobility work before class. That part is optional (but encouraged!), but you should be at the whiteboard when the coach calls everyone over. The whiteboard is where we explain the workout and go over everything you need to know so you can focus on training hard and having a great session.

What if I’m late to class?

We understand that life happens. Traffic shows up out of nowhere and schedules get busy. That said, being on time is the standard. It shows respect for your coaches and classmates, and helps make sure you get a safe and effective workout. If you’re less than 10 minutes late, jump into the warm up and we’ll get you caught up. If you’re more than 10 minutes late, a coach may adjust your workout for the day or ask you to join the next class. Our goal is always to keep things safe and productive.

I'm on the waitlist for class. How does that work?

We cap classes based on the workout, equipment, and space so everyone gets the best possible experience. If you join a waitlist, keep an eye on your app notifications and email. When a spot opens up, you’ll have a limited amount of time to accept or decline it. Only athletes who are officially registered for class can participate, so make sure you confirm your spot if one becomes available.

What should I bring to class?

  • Clothing: wear clean workout clothes that you’re comfortable sweating in. Shorts, leggings, sweatpants, t shirts, tanks, and sports bras are all common. Just come ready to move.Just don’t be the stinky kid in class!

  • Shoes: we recommend a relatively flat or low-drop training like shoe for most CrossFit workouts. Running shoes are also recommended for days with longer running distances.

  • Water: we have water bottles at the gym you can purchase, but most folks bring their own and use the water cooler to top it off during class.

  • CrossFit Gear: you’ll see lots of members with extra gear like their own jump rope, lifting shoes, gymnastics grips, a belt, wrist wraps, knee sleeves, helmets (kidding), the list goes on. None of these are required and you will get plenty fit with sneakers and shorts. If you decide to invest in something, a personal jump rope is a great first piece of equipment.

Can I wear headphones during class?

We ask that you do not wear headphones during class. Community is a big part of what makes this place special and we want you present and part of it! Coaches also need to communicate with members in an already noisy environment, so save headphones for open gym or cardio theater, just not group classes.

Membership and Facility

What if I need to pause or cancel my membership?

Membership cancellation and hold forms, as well as our membership policies can be found at Misfitgymportland.com at the bottom of the website. There is a strict 14-day cancellation policy and a 5-business day hold policy. Please review the forms so there are no surprises.

Is there a charge for cancelling my class reservation or no-showing?

The short answer is no. For our busy 5 and 6:15am classes, we ask that you cancel your reservation no later than 9pm the night before if there is a waitlist for the class which is often the case. If you no-show or late cancel to a class that had a waitlist, you may receive a friendly email reminder from us. Classes that aren’t full and don’t have a waitlist can be canceled at any time, but please do it as soon as you know you can’t make it so the coach can plan accordingly.

Can I come into the gym outside of dedicated class times?

Yes, absolutely. Members can do any extra training they want either in between classes or during the open gym times during the middle of the day. If you come in during a class, you are welcome to use the machines in Cardio Theater upstairs above the employee lounge. The main floor is reserved for the active class unless a coach makes a specific exception.

Do you have showers?

Yes - 3! During busy morning hours, one bathroom is designated as toilet-only bathroom to keep things moving. Please take your belongings with you when you leave.

Do you offer personal training?

Yes. Please email info@misfitgymportland.com and we can schedule a session or a time to discuss your goals.

So are you Misfit Gym Portland, or CrossFit MF?

We are proudly a licensed CrossFit affiliate named CrossFit MF, however in 2018 or so we rebranded to Misfit Gym Portland. We use them somewhat interchangeably, but both are correct.

Nutrition

What should I eat before and after I work out?

  • Before training, we recommend something light and easy to digest such as a banana, coffee, or a protein shake with some carbohydrates. Try to avoid high fat foods right before class. If possible, eat at least one hour before training.

  • After training, prioritize protein! A shake or meal that includes at least 30 grams of complete protein will support recovery and muscle growth.

Do you offer Nutrition coaching?

Nutrition is the foundation of your development and metabolic health. Based on your individual needs and goals, we can work with you to establish daily caloric needs, proper macronutrient allotment (carbohydrates, protein, and fats), and will get you started on the right foot with tracking your food. We do at least 1 nutrition challenge per year where you get additional support from the community and coaches. If you are interested in learning more about our nutrition offerings, email us at info@misfitgymportland.com.

Miscellaneous

How do I buy something from the lobby like a water bottle or t-shirt?

All purchases from the lobby are done through the store in the StreamFit app or one of the QR codes. Please complete your purchase at the time you take the item - we rely on the honor system so that we can provide you with cool stuff.

How long will it take for me to see results?

Among the many factors at play here, the most important one is attendance. If you're in class 4+ days per week, you will see noticeable fitness improvements in the first month. You'll also become more connected to the gym’s culture of accountability, nutrition, and community which will all accelerate your results. At less than 3 days per week it’s unlikely you’ll see significant change, which is true for any training program. You’re investing in yourself, so make it count.

What happens if I get hurt?

If you get hurt in class, stop right away and tell a coach.. If you get injured outside of the gym and aren’t sure what to do, you can either email us (if it’s severe) or come to class early and chat with the coach so they can make a plan for you. We work with injuries all the time and can keep you training while your injury heals.

What if I have other questions?

A coach on the floor can always help you out or will direct you to someone who can. If you need anything else, info@misfitgymportland.com or via a DM in the StreamFit app will get you a pretty quick response!
